Step 1: Verify Basic Connectivity

  • Open websites in your browser: confirm you're online.
  • Check Windows network icon for "No internet" or limited connectivity.
  • Restart your router if other apps also fail intermittently.

Step 2: Test Another Network

Connect via mobile hotspot and try the launcher 5-10 times. If it works reliably on another network, your home router DNS or firewall may block Microsoft endpoints. Adjust router DNS to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8, or contact your ISP.

Step 3: Disable VPN, Proxy, and Antivirus

VPNs and corporate proxies frequently cause intermittent Microsoft authentication failures. Temporarily disable:

  • VPN software
  • Proxy settings in Windows
  • Third-party antivirus web protection

Step 4: Update Gaming Services and Xbox App

Minecraft for Windows relies on Microsoft Gaming Services. Update via Microsoft Store → Library → Get updates.

If updates fail, reinstall Gaming Services:

get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-AppxPackage -allusers
start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN

Step 5: Sign Out and Sign Back In

Sign out of launcher, Xbox app, and Microsoft Store. Restart PC. Sign back in with the same account everywhere.

Step 6: Change DNS on Windows

  1. Settings → Network & Internet → your connection → DNS settings.
  2. Enable manual DNS: Primary 1.1.1.1, Secondary 1.0.0.1 (Cloudflare) or 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 (Google).
  3. Run ipconfig /flushdns in Command Prompt (Admin).

See community DNS fix story for a real-world example.

Step 7: Check Account Verification Blocks

If your Microsoft account had unusual sign-in activity, verification may be temporarily limited. Try Microsoft Authenticator instead of SMS, wait 24 hours, or use a different verification method.

When to Contact Support

If the launcher fails on multiple networks after all steps, collect failure timestamps, network type, and whether Xbox app shows similar errors. Contact Minecraft/Xbox support with these details.
