Fix: Minecraft Won't Launch After Pressing Play
The launcher opens but nothing happens after Play: or the game flashes and closes. Work through these fixes from quickest to most thorough.
Step 1: Repair or Reset the Launcher
- Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Minecraft Launcher → Advanced options.
- Click Repair, then test.
- If needed, click Reset.
Step 2: Run as Administrator
Right-click Minecraft Launcher → Run as administrator. Test Play again. Also ensure your user has full control of the .minecraft folder.
Step 3: Delete launcher_profiles.json
- Press Win+R, type
%appdata%\.minecraft, press Enter. - Delete
launcher_profiles.json(not your saves folder). - Restart launcher and sign in: profiles regenerate.
Step 4: Update GPU Drivers
Outdated graphics drivers cause silent launch failures. Update NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel drivers from the manufacturer's website. In Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics, set Minecraft to use your high-performance GPU.
Step 5: Check Mods (Forge/Fabric)
One incompatible mod can block launch entirely:
- Temporarily move all files from
modsfolder. - Launch vanilla installation.
- Add mods back one at a time to find the culprit.
Step 6: Delete Runtime and Versions (Last Resort)
In %appdata%\.minecraft, delete runtime and versions folders. The launcher re-downloads them on next Play: may take time but fixes corrupted files.
Step 7: Clean Reinstall (Bedrock on Windows)
- Uninstall Minecraft Launcher from Settings.
- Delete
%appdata%\.minecraftruntime/versions if Java issue persists. - Delete
%localappdata%\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftLauncher_8wekyb3d8bbweif exists. - Reinstall from Microsoft Store.
Step 8: Install Media Feature Pack (Windows N)
Windows N editions need the Media Feature Pack for some Store games. Install via Optional Features or Microsoft download.
